Mutah University, APC to Cooperate in Promoting Applied Scientific Research and Industrial Technologies

moota botashTAJJO-Amman 11 May 2015 – Mutah University and the Arab Potash Company (APC) signed on Thursday 11 May at APC head Office a memorandum of understanding (MOU) for promoting applied research,

industrial technologies, water desalination, surface and groundwater management, and environmental monitoring in Jordan. The MOU was signed by Mutah University President Professor Thafer Assaraira and APC President and CEO Brent Heimann.

Speaking at the signing ceremony, Brent Heimann said that this MOU aims to promote cooperation between educational institutes and industry in developing solutions to the problems that face industry. This cooperation will achieve the double advantage of enhancing the abilities of Jordanian students in applied research and problem solving in key areas and under real life conditions. This means improving the standards of education in applied sciences in Jordan and also raising the market value of students.

Professor Assaraira praised the positive role and continuous support that APC has provided for many projects at Mutah University, which include a WIFI network, a camera surveillance system and electronic gates at the campus which have improved the teaching environment and students’ wellbeing. He added that this MoU is another important step towards conducting applied research in an institutional and systematic manner, to help develop solutions to the challenges that face the potash industry and production processes, to the benefit of the University and the Company. Mutah University has more than 600 faculty members who are researchers in a wide range of fields that cover the Company’s needs for production, research and training.

Professor Tayel El-Hasan, Director of Prince Faisal Center, added that the MoU with APC is the first between the Company and a Jordanian university. The next steps will be for researchers from the University to conduct a field visit to the Company to learn about its industrial and environmental needs, as well as development processes and training needs. Research teams of specialists will then be formed by the University to propose applied research projects to develop solutions to these problems. The MoU covers a number of areas of applied scientific research in water, the environment, energy, industrial processes and training. It also covers cooperation in the use of the University’s chemical analysis laboratories and engineering workshops by APC.
